The EPO is simply the best pops orchestra in the UK! We are here to combine rock & pop with a classical orchestral. From open air concerts to corporate bookings the EPO is here to entertain…and it works! We are also proud to to be the legendary Hooked on Classics orchestra.

English Pops Orchestra

Created by Andy Smith in 1992, the EPO specializes in orchestra rock & pop. The EPO became known for presenting programmes that shook the conventional idea that an orchestra is solely for classical music. From TV themes to chart hits, disco to Hooked on Classics, our aim was to bring a ‘James Last’ feel to our concerts where the entertainment and fun factor to our precious audiences was paramount. Along came our connection with Hooked on Classics following our successful celebration of this legendary Ktel album series at the Bournemouth International Centre to celebrate Hooked’s 30th birthday! Hence maestro Louis Clark was invited back to conduct and became our president in 2011. Our other programme is Pop to the Prom which is a mix of pop chart hits, film & TV favourites with a Last Night of the Prom finish. We have built up an extensive library of music enabling us to tailer make your programme with ease. We also have full orchestration and filming services available as an add on. The EPO currently has some great deals on Hooked on Classics for any genre of concert weather it be corporate or open air festivals, we aim to please……..you wont find a friendlier orchestra to work with! Enjoy our video demos.

Louis Clark

A phenomenon in the world of cross over classical music, Louis Clark created Hooked on Classics with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which gave him No1 singles in both the Uk and USA. It earned him both Gold & Platinum discs in no less than 27 countries! Born in Bedford in 1947, Louis considers himself a musician rather than an educator. The Beatles played a huge part in his love for music and after the purchase of a £10 bass guitar, Louis after leaving school headed for Birmingham where he joined the Raymond Froggatt band. At this time he was also involved in arranging orchestral accompaniments for the band. This was something he particularly loved so it was at this time Louis decided to further his music education and attended the City of Leeds College of Music at the age of 24 where he studied composition. Eventually he met an old acquaintance and fellow Birmingham musician Jeff Lynne of ELO. Lynne invited Louis to work on the Eldorado album and from that day the unique symphonic string sound of ELO became part of the legendary sound. Louis recorded many more albums in his name, Seriously Orchestral, Music of Queen with many different orchestras. He has worked with Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Ultravox, UB40, Asia, Roy Orbison and many more. Naturally the EPO were delighted to take on Louis as their president and director of Hooked on Classics, bringing this unique symphonic sound ‘live’ to audiences, hopefully world wide!

Andy Smith

Andy studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London but on leaving, he entered the world of radio. He worked for Independent Local Radio and then moved to BBC Local Radio where he became a freelance arts presenter. Eventually Andy decided to go into the music profession and freelanced mainly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for over 23 years. He soon moved into the lighter genre of music with the RPCO, backing pop bands and touring the world. Andy has played on numerous film, TV and album tracks. In the early 1990s he decided to form his very own pops orchestra to promote his love of symphonic rock. This became the English Pops Orchestra and in 2011 he bought Hooked on Classics back to the UK after a ten year break with a live concert at the Bournemouth International Centre, celebrating 30 years of Hooked on Classics. This was the start of our collaboration with Louis Clark. Andy also now plays keyboard/synths with the top tribute band ELO Again. The EPO is here to entertain…..its all about that! Our audience/fans are precious and we intend to continue our work in the years ahead.

Phil Toms

As well as a distinguished career in music/media education, Phil is the assistant music director and music arranger AND keyboard player to the English Pops Orchestra. Phil took on the role as the Hooked on Classics keyboards with glee as for many years Louis Clark was an inspiration to Phil’s love of music arranging. Inspired by musicians such as Mike Oldfield, ELO, the Beatles, Phil is a mulit- instrumentalist who is known for his fast turn around of orchestral arrangements and original compositions. He also plays for Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention), Tom Newman from Tubular Bells and many more distinguished artists. He is also a regular on BBC Essex with his film reviews. We are thrilled to have Phil on board and he hopes to see you all soon with an EPO Hooked on Classics.
